Saturday February 18th, 7pm: Come along for an unforgettable experience as we explore the journey from poverty to hope. Using resources from World Vision we will hear sounds and stories of two Uganda children. It will be a powerful evening. We hope that you will plan on coming along!!

The purpose of the meeting will be to receive and approve the Terms of Call for Reverend Lyman and Reverend Marshall, and to review the reports of the church including the 2012 budget. Annual Reports will be available to read prior to the meeting. We have one volunteer to provide child care and would like an additional volunteer. As described in the September issue of the Deep Runner, all Sunday School Students ages 3 to 12th grade, are to be pre-registered prior to Kick Off Sunday, by completing the form shown at the bottom of this post. You can also find the form in the September Deep Runner. Please send completed forms to Besse in the church office. You may also bring them on Kick Off Sunday.

Save the date ~ September 11^th. 10:45am right after service. We will again have our picnic for the whole church. There will be fun for the kids, great food and lemonade for everyone. It’s a potluck so please sign up to bring a main course, side, salad or dessert. Let us celebrate a new year of fellowship and being church together! Hope you’ll join us and kick the new year off right!

Much of our traditional tea remains the same…there will be the fun, food and fellowship with those around you, there will be a short program that will entertain you with both song and a story to ponder upon. In the spirit of making the tea more accessible to the younger mothers of our church, we will once again be offering child care during the afternoon’s event. It will be provided by Girl Scout Cadette Troop #7020, please provide the requested information when signing up. You are, also, extended an invitation to bring your favorite tea sandwich or Christmas ‘goodie’ to share with the group BUT that is NOT necessary in order to participate. What is most important about this tea is that you enjoy the company of those around you on that afternoon. Sign-up sheets are located in the Narthex and on the bulletin board by Hoopes Hall. You are also able to sign up on using the form below.

This event is free to women of all ages. So come, invite a friend to join us in our celebration of ‘the reason for the season’!

Hurricane Irene may prove to be a significant disaster for all of the Northeast. In my work with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, I found that churches that did some simple planning before an event came through in far better shape.

Here is what I would suggest.

Prayers for all those affected by the storm. Prayers for the survivors and for all those who will respond to assist.

When you plan the food/water for your family for three to five days, plan for 2 extra people, so that you have supplies to share if necessary. As Christians we are called not to just take care of ourselves, but to take care of others.

This is vital!!!! Be aware of the others in your member care team and reach out to them!

If you can, reach out to members of your team who are single or homebound who may need help preparing for the storm. Can you take 30 minutes and go help put away the outside furniture for some of our older members and friends? Find out who should be contacted if there is an emergency. Some of our older members and friends may not have cell phones and may have trouble reaching out to family after a storm. Get the information ahead of time.

After the storm try and check in again. If you need to reach out by cell phone, remember that texting may work when voice will not(it’s a smaller signal and also uses less of your cell phone power). Do the members of your team have electricity and phone? Are they safe? Do they need to be moved to someone else’s home for a few days? Do we need to put together some folks to clear brush so others can get out of their homes?

The most important piece is just to be aware of others. There were those who survived Katrina, but could not survive the first few days after the storm. Others were saved because church members reached out and found them. Although it would be great to have a ‘formal’ plan in place, just your awareness and willingness to reach out to others will be enough. Don’t assume that someone else is doing this work.

I pray that we don’t need to use any of this. However, I know this plan can save lives.

I expect at this point that church will be canceled on Sunday morning so that our congregation will be safe. We have set up an automatic phone system that will call all members and friends on Saturday with a final decision. I ask that all of you take a few moments around 9:30 on Sunday(our usual starting time) to spend in worship and prayer with your family.

This particular string of storms has taxed everyone’s resources and so PDA is appealing for additional financial contributions, assistance with the preparation of cleanup buckets, registration of rebuilding crews when the time is right, and prayers for those whose lives have been turned up-side-down.

One of our own local churches is the staging area for the collection of cleanup buckets. You can take your completed buckets to the First Presbyterian Church of Ardmore, 5 West Montgomery Avenue (corner of Montgomery Avenue and Mill Creek Road) in Ardmore (19003). They will be open Monday through Friday, May 2 through June 15. Please call Ms. Anne Foote at 610-642-6650 to arrange your drop-off.
